Oheka Castle Hotel & Estate
Description
Long Island's Gold Coast was made famous by plutocrats and philanthropists of the last century who built their great mansions there: Vanderbilt, Dupont, Guggenheim ... and Otto Hermann Kahn. By 1921, Kahn had out-built them all with a vast Château complete with an ornamental parterre on a man-made hill overlooking Cold Spring Harbour. As one of the founders of the Metropolitan Opera Company, he was a socialiser and a regular entertainer of celebrities. Oheka Castle still remains the second largest private residence ever built in America. The recent renovation has faithfully brought the fairy tale castle back to all its glory. Not just the fabric of the building but the furniture, the furnishings, the décor, the grand bathrooms... even the door handles! Some things, however, have had to change; the high-tech facilities of our age are included but without compromising the unique heritage. The grandeur of the dining room and the excellence of its food would most certainly meet with Mr. Kahn's approval.
