Madrid Barajas MAD Airport was opened in 1933 though the first paved runway was only built in 1944. In 1965 the airport adopted the name it is known by today, Madrid-Barajas Airport, named after the small town near which it was located. The town, Barajas, has now become engulfed by the expanding city of Madrid and is one of its districts.

Since 1991, passenger traffic at Madrid Barajas Airport has grown by over 33 million, making it one of the busiest airports in Europe.

Iberia, the national airline of Spain, has its home at Madrid Barajas Airport. The international airline operates a fleet of 160 aircraft, and has been in operation since 1927.
